Too much like an advertisement?

People sometimes look for local Canadian businesses, so I thought this might be relevant

As an organization CIRA is decent, but the list is extensive so maybe they haven’t vetted it properly either

This post was reported, and often I will leave up a post once I’ve read through the report and decided that it should stay up. In this case, since I’m the one that posted it, it doesn’t feel right resolve the reports without a comment.

I left up the post because I think the reporter misunderstood what this was, which is my fault because I didn’t take the time to explain when posting. If people still think it’s inappropriate, I’ll remove it and not post these in the future.

The Canadian Internet Registration Authority is the not-for-profit org that manages the .ca TLD. They have grants for infrastructure and community projects, and they’re involved in the Fediverse through their partnership with the mstdn.ca Mastodon server.

Going off of their history and past work, I felt that the guide was in good faith and that it would be good to highlight some Canadian creators instead of large corporations. I don’t think they’re sneakily making money by highlighting these businesses, and so I left up the post.

More info: www.cira.ca/en/net-good/

Net Good by CIRA starts from the premise that the internet is a net positive for the world. We support projects, communities and policies that make the internet better for all Canadians. We do this through three pillars – Infrastructure, Online Safety and Policy Engagement. We also fund Grants for community-led internet initiatives through an annual call for applications. We collaborate with partners across the tech and policy sectors, nationally and internationally.

Net Good by CIRA is funded from the revenue CIRA generates through .ca domains and cybersecurity services.

Well, if the alternative is people losing $10k (or more)…

I agree, and I think that’s a part of it. From what I can tell, this toolkit extends to all “AI” used in healthcare, including some “AI” that we have been using for some time. The three it listed off near the beginning were robotics (assisted surgery), computer vision (diagnosis and screening), and then the natural language processing. The existing “AI” uses, which I’d prefer to just call algorithms, make sense for the most part.

My worry is that some institutions are going to be in a rush to set up NLP chatbots in client facing spaces. There should already be guidelines against HCPs inputting personal medical information into NLPs, but I think it’s still a concern if patients need to input it themselves when being triaged. Until we have hospitals and health departments self-hosting the LLMs that make the NLP possible, we should not be using them.

What happens when you call 988?

The hotline is available to anyone who is thinking about suicide, or who is worrying about someone they know, according to CAMH, adding that anyone who reaches out to 988 will be assessed for suicide risk.

People can call or text multiple times, depending on the support they need.

Once a person calls, a brief recorded message will let them know they are in the right place.

They will then be able to choose options to get the best support, including age, language preference (English or French) and whether they are Indigenous or not.

Following this, an important message about privacy and a link for additional information will be conveyed. It is up to the caller to provide how much or little personal information they share.

Security controls, including encryption and authentication, are in place to protect all personal information, CAMH said.

Once connected to a responder, the person will experience a safe space to talk, receiving empathy and assistance in developing strategies to establish safety during overwhelming moments.

Can children access the helpline?

Children and young adults can also call into the 988 helpline and receive specialized support.

If a young person is not comfortable speaking with a parent or guardian, the 988 responder will assist them to figure out who else in their life they might feel safe confiding in, CAMH said.

Ernst said adding the text-based option to the 988 helpline will particularly benefit young people, who are spending “unprecedented amounts of time” on their smartphones.

“Unfortunately, when we spend too much time on the internet and social media, it trains unhealthy mental, social and emotional habits,” he said. “And so I look at the presence of a text line and a phone line like this as one of those added resources that young people can use … when perhaps they’re stuck online or caught in a rabbit hole of an algorithm.”

For sure, it’s a impaired driving thing:

CounterAttack is a police-run roadblock tactic that catches drug and alcohol impaired drivers, and helps reduce injuries and fatalities. CounterAttack campaigns have been run in B.C. for over 35 years, and typically take place during July and December. A major part of CounterAttack is getting the message out that B.C.’s impaired driving laws are tough, impose harsh penalties on impaired drivers and make it likely impaired drivers will be identified and removed from B.C.’s roads.

Part of the recall included prepped cut fruit products. I don’t know the full extent of the recall, but that made me think it was kitchen related

Edit:

It says it’s investigating other potential cases and notes the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are also probing a salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes they describe as being the same genetic strain as the one in Canada. U.S. health officials said two people had died and 45 people were hospitalized nationwide due to the outbreak as of Friday.

Weird, it’s a genetic strain. Maybe it’s more susceptible to contamination?

His stuff is excellent

I first learned about him when someone posted this one on the subreddit

I feel like Shaun king posts get retweeted and shared because they’re easier to find / more detailed, especially early on. The reason why I heard about this was because someone I follow (who also doesn’t follow Shaun king) shared a shaun king post on their story.

So I try to separate people that re-share his stuff, from the guy himself

I’ll be honest though, I don’t know much of the controversy around Shaun King. I have heard people referencing issues like this but I didn’t follow up properly

I didn’t notice that, a lot of professors do have Wikipedia pages but this one reads like a resume/cover letter. Also the sources don’t really match what’s written; they’re related but not to some statements being made

It’s family medicine too

Dr. Ge grew up in Waterloo, Ontario, and is a family medicine physician and a resident physician in his fourth year of residency training

Yoni Freedhoff is an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Ottawa

the fact that Freedhoff posted over two weeks ago makes me think that Freedhoff’s post may not be the main cause of Ge’s suspension.

I feel like suspension decisions take time. I also don’t think the blog post was the sole reason for the suspension.

People are asking questions about what happened behind the scenes, using the post & Freedhoffs social media as insight for who was involved and what reasoning was used
